How are Architects and Structural Engineers different?

Both Structural Engineers and Architects design building projects. They collaborate on construction projects with the same end goal in mind, even though their roles are different. They both want a building they can be proud of once it has been completed. An architect will focus on the design and aesthetics of the build, whilst a structural engineer is looking at the building components to ensure that the building is created correctly and safely, using the right materials. Structural Engineers assess factors like strength and endurance to ensure that the building is fit for its intended purpose.

The role of a Structural Engineer
A structural engineer works together with an architect to preserve the structural integrity of a construction project, whether it be a bridge, a house, or a skyscraper. As their job title suggests, structural engineers prioritise how a structure will be constructed and what materials should be used to ensure long-term durability. They need to determine which materials will be able to withstand a building’s weight, then examine the design of a structure to make sure that these hold up against gravity, wind, and other forces.

The role of an Architect
Where structural engineers would focus more on structural integrity and the frame of a building, architects focus more on appearance. They design the appearance of a structure and what finishing material will be used. As such, they pay greater attention to how a finished structure will look.

For most major building projects, the client will need to hire the professional services of both an architect and a structural engineer.
