What is Structural Engineering?

Structural engineering is a blend of maths, science and art. It is all about understanding, predicting, and calculating the stability, strength, and rigidity of building structures. It requires creative and modern thinking, as well as the ability to communicate and work in partnership with a wide range of parties involved in a project. At Neasden Structural Engineers, we design safe and secure building structures which, once completed, will be stable and sound for years to come.

It is our responsibility to account for a structure’s stresses and pressures to ensure its durability. A Structural Engineer must also ensure that structures will not move or deteriorate throughout their lifetime. In short, we ensure that a building doesn’t fall down.

Creating structural designs and calculations
Structural engineers often collaborate with architects, contractors and building services engineers, overseeing the safe formation of structures whatever the purpose may be. Structural engineering requires specialist knowledge of structural design, building materials, and the impact of environmental factors and other hazards.

Our structural designs and structural calculations are derived from tried and tested design methods & 3D software. We work according to the latest standards to ensure best practice. Our solutions come together after weighing up the following factors: build-ability, sustainability, quality and cost; all whilst trying to meet the needs and expectations of our clients.

Common structural engineering projects include:

  • Chimney breast removal / inspections of a chimney breast that has been partially removed
  • Internal load bearing wall removal / knocking down internal walls
  • External load bearing wall removal / knocking through external walls
  • Beam calculations for internal / external wall openings
  • Structural calculations for a single and two-storey extensions
  • Structural calculations for internal changes for open-plan living
  • Creating building calculations and designs for new commercial or industrial premises
